Diet:

This is perhaps the least common cause of an itchy dog. Some dogs can be allergic to certain proteins such as beef, dairy, chicken, etc, and also grains such as wheat, corn, rice, etc. These allergic reactions may be exhibited in a number of ways that can include skin inflammation and itching. It is important to get this diagnosed properly by a vet to establish what exactly they are allergic to.

Environmental 

Factors:

Many dogs itchy skin is caused by seasonal allergies. These seasonal allergies seem to be most prominent during spring, summer, and autumn. This is mainly due to the warm and humid weather. Things such as blooming plants/flowers, grasses, weeds and trees are common contributors to seasonal allergies. You can help prevent the painful itching and scratching by regularly brushing and bathing your dog.

Fleas,

 Ticks &

 Mites:

Perhaps the most commonly recognised cause of any itchy dog are fleas, ticks & mites. You will most likely notice your dog itching and scratching around their head, neck, base of their tail, anus or groin area. Fleas can also deposit 'flea dirt' which can appear to look like flakes of black pepper. If you notice a tick on your dog, never attempt to remove this yourself. It takes a special tool to remove ticks, so it's best to take your dog to a vet. Regularly giving your dog treatment for all of these will help to prevent them.
